Oi Attack! Feat. Jenny Woo Gig Review

Turning a one-night show into a festival is a true test. This year’s Oi Attack! gig held last November 15 at A Venue in Makati became somewhat of an international Punk festival with the participation of stellar acts from 5 countries, including the Philippines.

The highlight of the event was the energetic set of by Canadian Oi acoustic singer-guitarist, Jenny Woo who wowed the audience with her unique sound and stage charisma. Reacting to the audience’s response, Woo, whose Oi Attack performance was the last in her Asian tour said that the night’s show was one of her most memorable gigs.

Other high points in the yearly show organized by Merck Alvarez, one half of the Punk and Rockman fame included sets by noted British group, Two Finger Salute, Oi Squad with members from Hong Kong, US and France, and Punk Ska group After-After-Party from Hong Kong.

Local bands Betrayed (fronted by founder Eddie Siojo who was in the country for a business trip) Bad Omen, Pusakal, Safety First, Backstage Ego & respected Reggae group, Reggae Mistresses also gave intense performances capping up the punk event’s line up.

The only drag is that the Oi Attack gig was over in just a couple of hours, but of course there is always next year. The organizer confided that there are invitations that the 2016 gig be held in sunny Boracay, which is pretty interesting. I’m already excited to see how punks will slam on white pristine sand and girls groove to Sex Pistols’ “Holidays in the Sun”.
